Time period: the final 1st Edition set, Neo Destiny, was released in 2002, which is why genuine 1st Edition cards are now over 20 years old and highly collectable

This said, both cards are currently banned in Legacy, and they are both brokenly powerful on their face, so my guess would be that they were simply too good for Standard, rather than being part of a specific oppressive combo

(2011-09-22) If you exile a double-faced creature card this way, you'll pay the mana cost of the front face

Either way they make great additions to your collection and create a very fun gameplay environment when played together
