According to the rules the process of casting creature cards (or any other non-land cards) consists of the following stages: you put a creature card on the stack, define its total casting cost and it locks in, then you get a chance to activate mana abilities (but only if the total cost requires mana), and, finally, you pay the cost
Any time you cast a spell that matches a creature type you choose, you get to make a token copy of it
When sacrificing something as a cost, this cost could no longer be prevented and needed to be paid at the same time as the mana used to cast the spell
