During it, you may play cards from your hand to add their counter value (the number in the bottom-left, usually +1000 or +2000) to the power of the Character or Leader being attacked
its a finite resource, a piece of history that cannot be reproduced
And that means that complete sets of the original 102-card base set run are pretty rare these days
